Jean-Pierre integrates four separate creation processes to produce a single vitreograph: conceptual design, serigraphy, print lithography, and hand-painting.
First, he uses a rapidograph pen to sketch his idea onto panes of glass. Elements from one level of glass might be tranfered to another and back again, and color is blocked out using acrylic paint until a coherent 3-D drawing emerges. Once the drawings are complete, the major elements are traced by hand onto transparent acetates, refined, then transfered onto silkscreens. Depending on the size and complexity of the piece, this initial process may take upwards of a month.
Second is the serigraphy stage. Layer by layer, color, shading, and line details are transfered onto the sheets of glass that will make up the final vitreograph. Since each color requires twenty-four hours to dry, this process can take several weeks to complete.
In the meantime, Jean-Pierre makes a lithograph for the background image - the only part of a vitreograph image that is not on glass.
Finally, all the elements - glass and paper - are assembled together, signed by Jean-Pierre, then sealed up in a lovely frame.
